Proper Ratio of Prop Diameter To Vessel Diameter

1. Use a high efficiency propeller stirrer with a diameter equivalent to 25-30% of the diameter of the mixing vessel.
2. Solution preparation practices are often over looked or discredited as a source of process variation but are critical for success.
How Many Props To Use?
1. One prop is placed at the top of the shaft, near the surface of the liquid.
2. The second prop is placed at the bottom of the shaft.
3. This configuration can produce the vortex that is required to draw in powder or liquid materials.
4. In general, dual props will also be required in any container whose height is greater than 1.5 times its diameter.
How Close To The Bottom of The Tank?
* Use the rule of thumb for prop mixers is to position the mixer propeller 1 to 2 propeller diameters from the bottom of the tank.
Where To Place The Mixer?
1. Effective mixing patterns are achieved when the mixer is angled 10 to 15 degrees away from the vertical, either off-center or on-center in the tank.
2. An on-enter angle (vertical position with zero angle) is better for simple formulas (film / plasticizer / T1O2). It will create a vortex and some foam.
* Vortex occurs when the contents of the tank swirl around the walls of the tank without much top-to-bottom turnover, this results in a less-efficient mixing operation and the possibility of uneven mixing or blending.
3. Positioning or angling a mixer 15 to 20 degrees off of the tank's centerline is preferred when mixing a slurry like coating formula (film / plasticizer / two or more dyes / large quantity of T1O2).
4. If you are using both types of coating solutions, use the off center position or consider a Homogenizer.
