Advantages


  • Higher spray rates possible
  • Less dependent on flow properties of pellet feed
  • Powder elutriation: only at higher airflow
       - Elutriation is a problem of separating particles based on their size, shape and density, using a stream of gas or liquid flowing in a direction usually opposite to the direction of sedimentation
  • Pellet growth is relatively uniform
  • Pellets have good flow properties
  • Pellets have low friability
  • Homogeneous drug distribution is possible

Disadvantages


  • Material loss due to adhesion with the friction plate
  • Scale-up designs beyond 300Kg are expensive and impractical
  • Risk of bed overwetting is high
