The Advantages and Disadvantages of The Centrifugal (Tangential) Coater
Source : Yenchen Technical Process Consultant, Dr. Fred Rowley
Advantages
- Higher spray rates possible
- Less dependent on flow properties of pellet feed
- Powder elutriation: only at higher airflow
- Elutriation is a problem of separating particles based on their size, shape and density, using a stream of gas or liquid flowing in a direction usually opposite to the direction of sedimentation - Pellet growth is relatively uniform
- Pellets have good flow properties
- Pellets have low friability
- Homogeneous drug distribution is possible
Disadvantages
- Material loss due to adhesion with the friction plate
- Scale-up designs beyond 300Kg are expensive and impractical
- Risk of bed overwetting is high
