General Critical Parameters in The Blending Cycle Used in Successful Scale Up
Source : Yenchen Technical Process Consultant, Dr. Fred Rowley
- Type (class) of blender Used
- “Fill Level”, Quantity of powder to be blended
There is agreement that each blender class has a minimum and a maximum fill and also that exceeding these limits will produce an ever increasing and finally unacceptable content uniformity variation.
Current knowledge and experience produces the following recommendation:
Drum Blender: 55%
Twin shell: 45-70% range
Double cone: 40-65% range
IBC Blender: 40-65% range
Octagonal Blender: 45-75% range - The method of loading the blender
- The use of pre-blending
- The use of an intensifier bar/agitator/baffle
Secondary mixing with a higher intensity devise is sometimes needed to break up “hot spots” and at times lumps.
This is especially important when using an IBC or an Octagonal blender. - Mixing time
- Lubricant blending time
- The method of unloading the blender
