Tablet Hardness Control Factors
Source : Yenchen Technical Process Consultant, Dr. Fred Rowley
There are no direct controls for tablet hardness on a tablet press.
Control Factors:
- over blended lubricant, not a press issue
- Tablet weight
- Tablet thickness
- Punch Length standardized (working length)
- Condition of the pressure rolls
- Feeder Speed optimized
- Press Speed ("Dwell Time"), aka turret speed
- Pre-compression tablet thickness
- Upper Punch Penetration
The Three Classic Signs We Have a Lubrication Problem:
- Lamination, chipping, Unusually high or failing friability (or abrasion) results.
- Soft tablets: tablets that barely meet the minimum hardness specification.
- Disintegration results that are more or less the same, even if the tablets are soft/barely passing.
